Finding and Keeping Cotton Yoga Mats

2

If you are considering a yoga class, one of the most attractive elements of this type of exercise is the limited amount of equipment that is necessary. All you really need to do yoga is comfortable workout clothes and one of the many cotton yoga mats available today. Finding the right mat can be more difficult than you think, because there are a lot of reasonable yoga mats out there. Why? Because the relationship that you develop with your mat can be much more significant than that of other types of fitness equipment. Why? Because you could potentially be using that mat for years to come, so you want to choose one that’s going to last.

Your Options with Yoga Mats

Sticky yoga mats come in a variety of materials and colors. The one common element that you want to have with your mat is a stickiness factor that allows you to plant your poses safely on the terra firma. Once the sticky yoga mats are damp, from water or sweat, they will stick to the floor. From there, you can select a mat that will work best for the type of yoga that you plan to do. Determining which mat is best will be easier if you ask your yoga teacher for help or do a little online research. Once you have your options narrowed down, go out and actually try out some yoga mats. And although it may seem shallow to select a mat based on color, keep in mind that you will be spending a lot of time looking down at that surface, trying to focus your energy. Your yoga experience will be much more enjoyable if you have a mat you find appealing.

Caring for your Mat

Most yoga mats will need to be broken in before use, and then cleaned periodically. Check and see if your yoga mat came with instructions. Follow any directions that came with your mat closely. The spin cycle on most top-load washing machines could damage your mat, so be sure to put it in front-load washers only. Putting your mat in the dryer can damage its sticky surface, so this should also be avoided. Just let your mat air dry, out of direct sunlight. If you don’t have time to let it air dry, you can try drying it on the lowest heat setting on your dryer for ten minutes.

Quality yoga mats can last for years when they are cared for properly. If you choose a mat made of the material and color you like, then you know you’ll want to use it for a very long time.
